Walnut Coconut Modak

Modak is a traditional Indian dumpling-like dessert made with rice flour and filled with a sweet mixture. It is considered to be Lord Ganesha's favourite food and is often offered to him as a form of devotion during the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. Modak has a unique texture and flavour profile and is loved by many across India and around the world.

Ingredients

2 tbsp ghee
1 tsp sesame seeds
1/2 cup California walnuts, chopped
3 cups fresh coconut, grated
1.5 cups jaggery
1/4 tsp nutmeg powder
1 tsp cardamom powder

For Dough
1.5 cups water
2 tbsp ghee
2 cups fine rice flour

Method

For Stuffing
1. In a pan heat ghee, add sesame seeds and walnut, mix well and sauté.

2. Add grated coconut, mix well and sauté for 4-5 minutes.

3. Then add jaggery and cook till the jaggery melts completely.

4. Add cardamom powder, nutmeg powder and mix well.

5. Switch off the flame and let the mixture cool.

For Dough
1. In a pan heat water. Add ghee and then add rice flour and mix everything well.

2. Now cover and cook on low heat for 5 minutes. Then remove and knead it.

3. Add some ghee and knead it again to make a soft dough.

For Making Modak
1. Take out lemon-sized balls of the dough.

2. Grease the mould with ghee; press the dough into the mould evenly from all sides.

3. Stuff the filling in the centre of the mould and seal from the bottom.

4. Fill a steamer with water, place the stand in the centre, once the water starts to boil, place the prepared modak on the banana leaf, now keep it in the steamer and cover it with the lid and steam for about 12 to 15 minutes

5. Once it’s done, carefully take out your modaks, and let them cool.

6. Transfer to a serving plate, garnish with saffron threads and enjoy!
