Walnut Storage & Handling

We have curated a few tips on the proper ways to store walnuts, keeping the Indian climate and lifestyle in mind.

Californian Walnuts are known for their mild flavour and beautiful warm-toned colours. To ensure their optimum freshness and taste, California Walnuts should be stored correctly and efficiently.

1.

Minimize Exposure to Air

To prolong the exquisite taste of walnuts, they need to be stored in air-tight containers or zip-locked bags. Minimum exposure to air will help retain their crunchy texture and 100% taste.
2.

Avoid Storing with Other Foods

As walnuts are strongly receptive to other food smells and strong odours, it is imperative that they are stored separately from other spices and eatables.
3.

Cold Storage = Fresh Taste

Walnuts go rancid when exposed to warm temperatures for long periods. Heat causes the fat in walnuts to change the structure, which creates off odours and flavours. Fresh walnuts smell mildly nutty and should taste sweet.
4.

In-time Preparation

To experience the fresh taste of walnuts as they have been just harvested, crack open the outer shell on the day of usage or only one day before.
5.

Control Temperature

For storage up to 6 months, walnuts should be refrigerated at 2°C to 5°C (35 F to 40 F). Use within 12 months when stored in a freezer at -18°C (0 F).
6.

Before Use, check for Freshness

Exposure to room temperature or warm/humid weather conditions can quickly lead to walnut deterioration. Remember to lid open packets after each consumption. Constantly check the quality and freshness before using walnuts for recipes. It is essential to maintain the correct temperature throughout the entire duration of storage.
